The story begins with the two protagonists, Dr. Hesselius and Mr. Jennings, confrontation at a party. Lady Mary, a mutual friend, tells Dr. Hesselius that Mr. Jennings is a well man and lives a happy carriage. Dr. Hesselius begs to differ; he sees Mr. Jennings some clock fourth dimensions staring at the cover and watching something that is not there.
